20 Questions Every Parent Must Ask During a School Visit
Walk into every school visit prepared. These questions — organised by category — will help you cut through the sales pitch and understand what a school is actually like.
School open days are designed to impress. Polished presentations, enthusiastic staff, gleaming facilities — all carefully curated. Your job as a parent is to look past the theatre and find the school behind it. These questions will help.
We recommend asking 4–5 questions per category. Take notes. Compare answers across schools. Pay close attention to how questions are answered — a confident, transparent school will not flinch.

Practical tip
Notice how the school reacts to your questions. Deflection, vague answers, or visible discomfort are informative. The best schools will welcome scrutiny because they have nothing to hide.
Before you go
Print these questions and bring them to the visit. Taking notes in front of school staff sends a message: you are a serious, engaged parent. Schools that intend to do right by your child will appreciate that.
